A healthy, balanced diet gives your body the energy it needs and keeps your body functioning correctly. A healthy diet can prevent some chronic diseases and help reduce your risk of some cancers. Another benefit is that a healthy diet gives your organs and tissues the proper nutrition to work effectively. This makes your body less prone to disease, illness, infection, and fatigue. As important as all this is to adults, it is crucial to the growth and development of a child. Other than growth and developmental problems, an unhealthy diet will make a child have a poor academic performance and lead to bad eating habits for a lifetime. Obesity and diabetes are prime examples of what bad eating habits can do to a child. Other than eating a healthy diet, a small child should drink 100 percent whole milk until the age of 2. I, myself, still can’t live without my whole milk. It was the only milk I was allowed to drink as a child. I can still remember my parents and grandparents repeatedly focusing on the importance of eating three healthy meals a day and always finish drinking your milk. According to them, Milk was like a Super Miracle Drink that made you have superhero strength and grow six inches overnight. Another thing they stressed was to eat a big breakfast because breakfast was the most important meal of the day. Turns out they were right. It’s important to know that the same rules that apply to adult nutrition also apply to a child. The 7 main nutrient classes are: Vitamins, Minerals, Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fibre, Fats, and Water. You want to eat fresh foods instead of processed foods. Fresh foods have the best nutrients in them and don’t have all the added bad, unwanted byproducts like processed foods do. Each food group has a recommend daily amount to obtain optimal benefits. Once you start eating the right way, your body will thank you. A healthy, balanced diet along with getting exercise everyday makes for a healthy lifestyle.
