Do you enjoy Yoga? If you answered yes, chances are you will like Pilates. Pilates and Yoga both have a strong mind/body connection. Pilates is a form of exercise designed to target your core, improve strength and flexibility, promote proper postural alignment, and enhance mental awareness. Pilates always makes me feel better, relieves stress, and unwinds my body and mind from my daily activities. Pilates is definitely an awesome mood booster. It’s a win win. Pilates consists of low-impact strength, flexibility, and endurance movements. The movements are usually done in a specific order to maximize your strengthening potential. Pilates is an intense structured program with a medium intensity level. Pilates puts a strong emphasis on technique, your form. You must be able to focus and concentrate, because you will have to hold some poses for a bit. You will definitely feel it in your muscles during each exercise. The movements require a lot of precision and control. Pilates principles are concentration, centering, control, breathing, precision, and flow.. You will learn proper breathing techniques which play a major role in Pilates. You will use your own body strength instead of weights in Pilates. This makes your muscles much stronger. The trick is to engage your muscles in a strong but gentle way. You will learn how to perfect your form to help prevent an injury. You can start with basic exercises and work yourself up to more advanced moves. You can taylor Pilates to your individual needs if you have health conditions. Always check with your doctor first, before starting any exercise program, if you have pre-existing conditions. You can do Pilates on a exercise mat at home, using a DVD.. This is how I do it. Or you can go to a gym or studio that has special equipment, a class, or a trainer who can supervise you. While doing Pilates, wear clothes that are tight enough that you can see your body, but you can still move. Gaiam has a great selection of leggings and fitted tanks. That is what I wear and I love it. Your going to need a good Pilates Mat, Exercise Ball, and Yoga Blocks. And of course a beginners DVD. I listed all this for you below. In my Follow-Up I am going to tell you about three of my favorite Pilates exercises. You should give these a try. They are a good place to start and target numerous areas of the body. If you’re a beginner then only do 10 to 20 Reps of each. I promise you will feel the burn, but in a good way. And because you have to focus and concentrate so strongly, you feel like you just got through with A meditation session.. Pretty Awesome, stress relief accomplished.
